How to Mix and Match Patterns

There was a time when mixing patterns when choosing or putting together an outfit was strictly forbidden. It was completely unheard of to mix patterns. However, times have changed and right now mixing clothing patterns is one of hottest fashion trends out there. Nevertheless, you don’t want to mix all those patterns incorrectly and end up looking like you got dressed in the dark. Here are a few tips to help you gain style while mixing those patterns.

When mixing patterns, make sure that you stay within the same color palette. Choose patterns that are in the same hue and if you can, choose patterns with the same colors in each. For instance, you can put together browns and oranges, but don’t put those colors with pinks and greens.

Choose patterns that are different sizes. You can pair a large plaid pattern with a small, delicate pattern very successfully.

Try polka dots. These patterns are easy to mix because they don’t have a lot of details and will mix very well with many other patterns.

Make sure that at least one piece of the outfit is tailored. This will prevent you from looking like a piece of drapery. For instance, choose a flowing skirt in conjunction with a fitted blouse. You can also try a pencil or A-line skirt with a more boxy shirt.

Use accessories. Don’t just limit the pattern mixing to tops and bottoms. Use scarves, shoes, belts and hats that can accentuate the chosen patterns. Also, use your jewelry sparingly as it will take away from the statement your clothing is already making.
