KFB is charged by state statute to manage and direct the state's Adopt-A-Shore program, which is specifically designed to "inspire community action and to promote the protection and effective management of Florida's coastal resources" by involving volunteers in the solution.

PROJECT NEED:

24% of Floridians considered "Litter on beach/water" as the most important problem affecting Florida's marine resources according to a recent DEP survey of Boaters and Anglers;

Urban litter ends up in coastal areas as non-point source pollution and represents approximately 70-80% of marine debris according to the Ocean Conservancy, formerly known as the Center for Marine Conservation;

Animals and plants are entangled in debris. According to the Save the Manatee Club, manatee entanglement and ingestion of debris (especially plastic) is one of the major concerns for this endangered species;

Litter in coastal areas negatively impacts tourism.

PROJECT GOALS:

Increase public awareness about the effect of litter and marine debris on Florida's environment.

Prevent litter through developing a sense of responsibility and understanding about the threat litter presents to Florida's aquatic environment.

Build environmental citizenship by adopting one mile of coastline and committing to three clean-ups per year.

Reduce litter and marine debris by 50% in the State of Florida.
